What is a good score for NEET 2024?
What is a good score in NEET 2024?
Hello aspirants and future medical students, confused about what score you should aim for? Don’t know what score will get you a good rank in NEET?
Now, these are some excellent questions. If you are asking these questions, you are on the right path. I mean, it is smart only, right? If you don’t know what to aim for, how will you create a study plan?
Identifying the score you want to aim for should ideally be one of the first steps in your NEET preparation.
So, what really is considered a good score in NEET? It all depends on your choice. I’ll tell you how.
What is NEET 2024?
NEET exam or the National Eligibility Entrance Test, is the only test you will have to take to enter a medical college in India- Government or Private. The total marks in the NEET exam are 720. And, since 2020, one or more than one student has scored 720/720 marks.
So, imagine the competition you have to endure in the exam. This is also because of the paper pattern and level of questions that NTA has been using to test the students. The questions are entirely NCERT books-based, so if you have read and practiced your NCERT’s well, you can easily get a good rank.
How is your rank decided? Read here.
What is a “good score” in NEET? Why should you understand the scoring system in NEET?
A good score in NEET 2024 is essential for securing admission to top medical colleges. Inflation is more apparent in the NEET ranks than the cost of living, so if you have any CA friends, give them the example of NEET ranks, haha)
This information is important for you as it helps you understand your expected rank based on your score in the exam. By knowing your rank, you can have an idea of your chances of getting admission to medical, dental, AYUSH, BVSc & AH colleges in the country.
Considering the inflation in NEET ranks, even if you score more than 650 marks, you will still be getting a rank of around 5000. That is crazy, right? Well, that is what has happened to the NEET exam ranks since 2020.
So for a general overview, how much should you aim for in NEET 2024?
It all depends on these factors:
Your domicile state
Why do you need to know your domicile?
Because, there are two types of medical seats in NEET. 85% of all seats in a state are reserved for the students belonging to that state (who have the domicile of that state) and rest of the 15% can be applied by students from all over India using the All India Counselling. Thus, there are two Counselling you can take part in: State Counselling and All India Counselling.
So, how is your domicile state decided? It differs from state to state. Here are some rules:
-
- It can depend on your permanent residence. Say, if you were born in or lived in a state for more than 5-10 years (can differ state-wise. ), you might be eligible for to apply for the 85% state quota in that state and participate in the State Counselling.
-
- It is decided in a lot of states (for eg Delhi) by the school you have passed your 12th boards from. I’ll explain. Say, if you belong to Uttar Pradesh but you enroll yourself in a school in Delhi after 10th standard and complete your 12th boards from that school in Delhi, you will be eligible for the 85% state quota of Delhi.
Read more about the Counselling process and the specifics in our NEET Counselling Blog section.
Your reservation category
Every college has some seats reserved based on the caste category you belong to. You will have to get a category certificate to prove and apply for the caste-specific reservations. Thus, you might get a seat at a lower mark than other category students. So, ensure you check the category wise marks needed to get a medical college seat and plan your preparation accordingly.
Your gender
If you are a female, some states like Bihar have seats reserved for you in the 85% state quota. So, you might be eligible to get an MBBS seat in a college at lower marks than your male counterparts. (LMAO, I am writing this blog on the International Women’s Day)
Your degree preference: MBBS, BDS, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, etc.
MBBS has a higher demand than other medical degrees. But, that does not mean that other degrees are less valued than MBBS. A healer is a healer, regardless of the degree you pursue.
You will have to score more marks to get an MBBS seat. The marks needed, keep increasing if you want a government seat, you belong to a state which offers less number of MBBS colleges and seats or, if you want a reputed medical college.
Whether you want a private college or a government seat
Private colleges do not require very high marks to get MBBS admission in their college because they are very expensive and thus, less number of aspirants prefer them. Some private medical colleges may even admit aspirants who score marks less than 300 as long as you can afford the high course fees. So decide wisely, before enrolling in a private medical college, especially if you will be taking a loan to study in a private medical college.
Whether you want a great and reputed medical college or you are only aiming for a government MBBS seat
Ok, so this entirely a choice. If you want to study MBBS from a very reputed medical college, you will have to work much harder. You will have to get a rank under 4000 to get an old and reputed medical college.
For example, if you want to get AIIMS Delhi as a general category student, you need to get a rank under 50 to be on the safer side.
Does it matter if you don’t pursue your MBBS degree from a reputed college? Not really. The MBBS curriculum is similar throughout the country.
Which state you wish to study your degree in?
As I explained above, there are two types of quotas that apply during the NEET counselling. One is All India Quota (15%) and the other one is State Quota (85%). If you have the state domicile of Maharashtra, you will be eligible to apply for 85% reserved seats in Maharashtra state and thus, you might get Grant Medical College easily (for eg, 640 marks). But, say, you belong to Uttar Pradesh and want to study in Mumbai, you will have to score much higher (680+). It’s because only 15% of the total seats in Grant Medical College are given in the ALL India Quota. (38 AIQ seats out of the total 250 seats).
So based on these factors, this is a general overview of the NEET ranks you should aim for:
-
- If you want an AIQ seat, it will require rank less than 20,000.
-
- If you belong to high cutoff states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Delhi, anything less than 25k is regarded great.
-
- If you belong to low-cutoff states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, it can go up to 45k. These states are “low-cutoff states” because either they have less number of medical seats or less number of people sit for the NEET exam in that state.
-
- In states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, you also earn a government seat up to 58k rank.
-
- In Karnataka, you can secure government seats in private medical colleges as well. The expenses can reach 3.5LPA, and such seats are accessible even for General Merit students with a rank of 80k.
-
- So good rank differs from place to place.
-
- You are eligible for up to 22k ranks and can get into medical colleges only up till the third round.
-
- However, for a decent rank, under 20k AIR is regarded good, under 15k is better, and under 10k is considered exceptional, and if you fall within the 5k group, congratulations as you will be admitted to top-tier universities.

Scores needed to get a Medical College vs Category- wise Cut off:
Category-wise cutoff release by MCC ( the counselling body for medical admissions) is different from the marks you need to get a medical college in Indian government and private medical institutes. Don’t understand? Read our comprehensive blog on NEET Percentile vs Marks.
Category-wise cut off tells you the minimum marks you need to participate in the counselling process for Medical admissions.
Usually, the marks you need to get an MBBS seat in government or private medical colleges are much higher.
If say you belong to the general category and 132 marks and the lowest QUALIFYING marks are 130- you can sit for the counselling process and try to get a medical seat in courses like MBBS, BDs, Ayurveda or Homeopath.
Now it is highly unlikely that you will get a MBBS seat at 130 marks if you belong to the general category, but you might get a MBBS seat in a private medical college (which will be very expensive) or an admission in other courses like BDS, ayurveda etc..
Or if you want get MBBS admission abroad (outisde india), starting in 2024, the Indian government will require students to pass the NEET exam if they want to pursue MBBS studies abroad. So, if you just qualify the NEET exam (get the minimum marks for your category in NEET ), you will be able to get admission into an MBBS college outside India.
Now do you understand the difference between cut off marks and marks needed to get a MBBS seat?
No? Read our comprehensive blog here to understand it in depth.
NEET 2023 Tie-breaking Policy
The competition for the NEET 2023 Examination is fierce, therefore two students may achieve the same score. To address this issue, the NTA has implemented a tie-breaking guideline for students, which includes:
In the event of the same marks, the student with higher marks in the Biology course would be considered.
If there is still a tie, the student with the higher mark in the Chemistry subject will be considered.
If there is still a tie, the student with the fewest number of erroneous questions in the exam will be considered.
If the circumstance remains unfavourable, the elder student will be given preference over the other.
