How to Set Up a Hostel Room in Limited Space: Some Tips
Hello future doctors. We all know about the atrocities of the hostel. Most of us get very small rooms. Setting it up for 2 people becomes a challenge.
However, with some creativity and organization, you can use your small room and create a fully functional and comfortable living area.. Here are some tips to help you make the most of your hostel room.
Use The Vertical Space
When floor space is little, look up!
- Ask the electrician to help you install wall-mounted shelves or racks. You can use these to store books, toiletries, and other things. If you do not have enough storage space, I can promise that your bed will be littered all the time.
- If installing wall shelves is not allowed, try to get a thin yet tall storage cabinet. You can get it custom made from any local market.
- You can also use hooks or over-the-door hangers. Everyday essentials like bags, coats, and accessories can be hung up on these hooks. This will save space in the cupboard and will also keep these everyday items accessible.
Go for a U-Formation
Arranging your furniture in a U-formation can help you spare some floor.
- Privacy and Space: Place your bed, cupboard, and study table in a U-shape. This means that your bed and your roommate’s beds will be at right angles to each other. This will give you guys some privacy.
- Middle Space: The open middle area can be used to sit, study together, or just move around more freely. The crammed up, small room will feel a lot more spacious with some floor in the middle.
Under-Bed Storage
The space under your bed can also be used for storage.
- You can get cheap plastic storage bins or under-bed organizers for winter clothes, shoes, and extra bed sheets. Always label them.
- I used to forget where I had kept certain stuff and then had to open every container to find it. Don’t make the same mistake.
Foldable Chairs And Stools
- You can consider getting a foldable chair for the room. You can open it when you want to study and can tuck it away when you are resting or having fun.
- Similarly, you can get small stools. When one of you uses the study table, the other one can sit on the stool, and use his bed as the table to study.
- Alternatively, if you do not want to clutter the room with a study table and chair, you can get foldable tables. These are very popular in hostels, you can easily buy one online.
Smart Clothing Storage
Clothing can take up a lot of space if not organized properly.
- If your roommate agrees, you can get one tall cupboard instead of getting two. You can then divide the shelves amongst yourselves.
- Obviously, all of your clothes won’t fit into the cupboard. So, pack the party clothes and winter clothes in a suitcase. Keep this suitcase either under your bed or on top of the cupboard. You can use clothes from this suitcase when needed and then put them back.
- Install hooks at the back of your door for everyday clothes. This will further reduce the number of clothes that you need to put in your cupboard.
- Keep a laundry bag under the study table. Dump used clothes into it but don’t let them pile up beyond necessary.
Stay Minimalist
Less is more when it comes to small spaces.
- Try not to hoard unnecessary items. In a small space, priorities matter. Go through your belongings and get rid of anything you don’t need or use. This makes it easier to keep your space organized.
- Keep everything organized with the help of plastic/cloth organizers and labels. It is easy to lose track of your stuff when the place is cluttered.
- Use pen stands, and other small organizers too.
Keep it Clean
When the space is small, cleanliness becomes necessary for survival.
- Tidy up daily and do a more thorough clean weekly. This will prevent clutter from accumulating.
- Keep a small trash bin in the room too. Use it for dry waste only as wet waste will start stinking.
- Don’t forget to put up posters and photo frames! Add a few fairy lights and the room will feel like home before you know it.
Conclusion
As I said, be smart about your space. A small space is tricky to work with. But once you put your mind and heart to it, the room will start feeling homely in no time.
By using the vertical space, going for the most efficient arrangement of furniture, and keeping the room organized and decluttered, you will soon create a comfortable space. With these tips, you can make the most of your small hostel room and enjoy a cute little living space. Welcome to hostel life!
