The Worst People in Medical Colleges: 20 Red Flags
Two truths and one lie. Medical college is full of snakes. You will have to let go of friends and you will find new friends. There’s a hundred percent chance that the first person you lay eyes on in medical college is going to be your best friend for life.
I hope you guessed the lie correctly. See, friendship is a rollercoaster. You might find the best people or you might have fights everyday. It’s a gamble. But, the best thing is that you can control who you want to be friends with and who you do not want to be friends with.
Here is a list of the people you want to avoid at all costs.
1. Too much of a gossip:
All they talk about is someone else. You can never have a real meaningful conversation with them.
2. Mocks you for studying:
I mean, you are in medical college, you are going to handle lives. Someone who makes fun of you for studying clearly does not understand the gravity of the profession.
3. Mocks you for going out:
Clearly, you are a person of choice. You do not want anybody policing you either. Do whatever you want. How you balance life is up to you.
4. Boasts about money:
No-no. Don’t entertain the egos of people who thrive on their family wealth. Actually, scratch that. Don’t entertain anybody’s ego.
5. Can’t take a joke on themselves but keep commenting on other people:
The classic middle school bully, who starts fretting when they are the butt of the joke. These people are deeply insecure. You do not want them in your life.
6. Takes credit for your work:
You will think of being the bigger person, and will let them take credit once. But then it will become a pattern. Eventually you will lash out and pick a fight. Avoid the future fight by avoiding catering to this person.
7. Does not give back as much as they take:
You always show up, you offer help, you take extra efforts for their comfort. But every time this person is expected to show up, they will bail. The biggest red flag.
8. Won’t stand up for you:
If somebody is shit-talking about you behind your back, this person will join them instead of asking them to stop. Then they will also try to justify it by saying ‘I was just joking.’
9. Can’t communicate, but will just hold grudges:
You are not a mind reader, you cannot understand what will bother someone else. If they do not like something, they are supposed to speak up, or let it go. You cannot hang out with people who expect you to read their minds.
10. Have the wrong ideas about drinking and smoking:
People who get into smoking only because they think it is ‘cool’ are not the smartest people. Trust me, it won’t take time for them to either force you into smoking or decide that you are too uncool for them.
11. Don’t let you study during exams:
People who are awfully unserious about medicine and make you feel bad for prioritizing study. They will force you to ‘Chill out’ and will expect you to hang out with them a day before the exam.
12. Lie to you about their preparation:
People who keep going on and on about how they are going to fail but end up scoring much more than you.
13. Stress you out over unnecessary stuff:
They will keep talking about how they feel so guilty for studying so little when they are studying THE ENTIRE DAY. They will talk about journals and classes and attendance the entire time, where again they are doing much better than you.
14. Selfish during someone else’s party and achievement:
Somebody who says ‘No, I don’t like this place, we will go somewhere else.’ When it is somebody else’s birthday and the birthday girl wants to celebrate it in that particular place. Just an example.
15. People who can’t say sorry at all:
No amount of feedback gets them to just accept their mistakes and say sorry once. If they cannot apologize, obviously they can’t ever put anything else above their ego.
16. Turn everything into a competition:
They will fight you about anything. Cannot play a game of UNO without having a breakdown about the rules differences. They have to win, it is pathological how much they crave it.
17. Undermine what you do:
They will keep criticizing your choice of work. They will make fun of the clubs that you are a part of and keep commenting on how you are wasting your time. Meanwhile, they have nothing of their own going on.
18. Leaves you when they start dating:
They will not even talk to you when they are with their partner. The entire world disappears to them. But when they need help, they will come back to you.
19. Too much into themselves:
They keep turning every conversation to make it about them. They hardly seem interested in anything else. A good tell of a self absorbed person is that they are a very bad listener.
20. Act superior:
They belittle you for who you are. They might make fun of you for asking questions. They might laugh at other people for everything. Dissect every body head to toe.
Honestly, I could keep going on and on about this topic. Right now, you might not identify these people. It is because everybody is nice initially. I hope that you can see past the pretense. I hope that you are able to find friends that make you feel wanted and seen.
With good friends, everything is better. It will take time but trust the process. All the best looking for the perfect friends.
