Hello, NEET aspirants, are you ready for this short blog? Today, we’ll discuss How to highlight the NCERT Textbook.
Everyone is confused about ‘What’s important and what’s not’ and the fear of missing out on details often leads to over-highlighting. Has anyone fully colored their NCERT?
Today, let’s explore a more sophisticated approach where we’ll use just three colors and learn to highlight the NCERT. I’m sure this technique will make highlighting more beneficial.
Color One: Keywords
Keywords are the words in a particular paragraph that should remind you of the entire paragraph upon seeing them. For example, if I’m reading the excretory system, I’d highlight ‘zones’ in the anatomy of the kidney.
When I revise, seeing this word, I should remember everything in that particular paragraph and section, here- The cortex, medulla, the medullary pyramids, and the columns of bertini.
In the next section, I can highlight ‘glomerulus’, then ‘Bowman’s capsule’ and so on.
It entirely depends on you how many broad terms you want to highlight. Here, instead of highlighting both ‘glomerulus’ and ‘bowman’s capsule’ then ‘renal tubule’ I could just highlight ‘nephron’. The more you challenge yourself, the more you’ll discover your capabilities.
Color Two: Examples
One color will be reserved only for examples. Suppose I’m reading the plant kingdom, then I’d highlight ‘Class Chlorophyceae’ and its examples – ‘Chamydomonas, Volvox, Ulothrix, Spirogyra, and Chara’ in the same color.
Important dates in ecology can also be highlighted in the same color. This color is for rote learning, you have to fix these points in your mind.
Color Three: Forget-Me-Nots
This color will be used later. This will only come into action once you’ve gone through the material AT LEAST twice.
Whatever part keeps getting missed by you or the parts that you don’t remember at all will be highlighted in this color. It’s like a spotlight on the information that needs extra reinforcement.
Color Four?
‘But hey, I’m used to coloring, if I don’t, I won’t remember.’
Pick up your pencil, buddy. If you color the entire NCERT, your mind will get quite cluttered while reading. You won’t be able to focus; it’ll be too distracting.
Use your pencil, and if you want, underline everything while reading, no problem.
Underlining for First Reads:
If you’re confused about the keywords, it means that you’ve not understood the material thoroughly. One thing you can do to change this: When you open a new chapter, first control your highlighter.
Take a good read, and whatever seems like keywords to you, underline them. Keep reading until you can easily identify the keywords before committing to colors.
The Empty Spaces:
Your highlighted textbook should be visually pleasing and informative. The spaces between written sections can be used for small notes, comments, or mnemonic devices.
For biology, NCERT is god, everyone knows this. So, if you have something to add to this golden book, do it there itself. There’s no need to make notes. Just revision sheets and NCERT, that’s it.

Avoid the Rainbow!
I know, there’s a temptation to turn everything into a rainbow. But please understand this isn’t an effective strategy. Remember, clarity is needed, not chaos.
Try the technique mentioned above once and then decide for yourself if you still want to indulge in rainbow-making.
To sum it up, highlighting an NCERT textbook is an ART. It combines keeping everything organized, and personalized as per your needs. Your highlighted book should reflect your understanding.
So, choose your colors wisely, study smart, and remember that less is more. In NEET, mastering the details is success, one color at a time.
Happy highlighting and best of luck in your NEET journey
